No one likes a messy desktop. A large number of icons, dumped on a desktop, without any logic, will make it difficult to find something specific and it will hinder your work considerably. Instead of arranging your icons manually, in separate lines or columns, you can use Fences to make this task as simple as possible. It provides a unique solution for categorizing any icons on your desktop, hiding your icons and much more.

Fences can be installed swiftly, on Windows XP (32-bit only), Vista, Win 7, as well as Windows 8. If you don't want to install an additional toolbar on your web browser, you should opt for a manual installation. The software will launch automatically and it will run at all times.

While running, the program can organize your icons in different groups, called "fences", which can be moved and resized like standard windows. Once installed, Fences will add a new section in the Control Panel, where you may customize the appearance and behavior of your groups and access various instructions. You will also find a new option when you right click anywhere on your desktop. You can select this option to enable the fences feature or bring up the program's settings panel.

If you are a first time user, the software may create a number of groups and organize your icons immediately. By default, icons are organized in program shortcuts, folders, as well as files and documents, but you may create your own groups, to organize music, web links, downloads and much more. You just need to draw a rectangle on your desktop and the option for creating a new fence will pop up. You can also create rules, with various criteria. For example, it is possible to organize icons by size, name, creation date and so on.

If you place a new item on your desktop, the software can send it to a specific fence automatically. For this, you must associate specific types of icons or created rules with an existing fence. Alternatively, you can select similar options from pop-up menus, on individual fences. Besides organizing icons in groups, it is possible to create folder portals, which look and feel just like fences, but they will display a folder's contents. They are created the same way as fences, but you will have to select a folder on your hard drive as well.

To avoid crowding your work space with fences, the software makes it possible to grab and pull the edges of the screen, to reveal new pages, just like on a smart phone. Additionally, you can hide all fences and portals instantly, just by double clicking anywhere on your desktop.

Pros

The software is capable of categorizing desktop icons, in separate groups, automatically. It is very flexible when it comes to associating specific types of icons with individual groups. You can hide all fences and folder portals instantly or switch between pages just like on a mobile phone.

Cons

Fences and portals are created by drawing a rectangle, but this may hinder you a bit, when selecting icons. With the smart and unique features that Fences provides, a cluttered and messy desktop can be turned into a clean and very well organized work space, in a matter of seconds.
